The miracle of San Gennaro on 16 December: what it is and how to attend
Three times a year Naples waits for the blood of San Gennaro (Saint Januarius), kept in a vial in the Cathedral, to turn liquid again. The December date is the least known and the least crowded: it commemorates the eruption of Vesuvius in 1631. Here is what happens and how to attend respectfully.

The miracle of the blood
In the Chapel of the Treasure of San Gennaro, inside the Cathedral, two vials are kept containing the blood of the patron saint of Naples, a 4th-century martyr. On three dates a year the vials are shown to the faithful: if the blood, which usually looks solid, liquefies, tradition sees it as a good omen for the city. Sometimes it happens straight away, sometimes after hours; on some occasions it does not happen at all, as on 16 December 2020.
Why 16 December
On 16 December 1631 Vesuvius began one of the most violent eruptions in its history, which destroyed the towns on its slopes. Neapolitans carried the saint's bust and vials in procession, and according to tradition the lava stopped before reaching the city. Since then 16 December has been one of the dates of the miracle, also known as San Gennaro's "patrocinio" (patronage).
How the day unfolds
The cult of the saint is looked after by the Deputazione della Real Cappella del Tesoro di San Gennaro, a lay institution founded in 1527 and chaired by the Mayor of Naples. The day usually follows this pattern:
- in the morning the vials are taken out of the safe in the Chapel of the Treasure and shown to the faithful;
- during the day the reliquary remains on display for prayer;
- the announcement that the blood has liquefied comes when it happens, with the waving of a white handkerchief.
The exact times for 2026 have not been announced yet: check the websites of the Diocese or the Treasure Museum in the days before.
Tip: 16 December is a Wednesday, a working day: the Cathedral is much less crowded than on 19 September. Arrive early in the morning, and remember it is a religious celebration: no flash and no chatting during Mass.
