Immaculate Conception weekend 2026 in Naples: what to do from 5 to 8 December
In 2026, 8 December (the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, a public holiday in Italy) falls on a Tuesday: with one day off work, Italians get a long weekend (ponte) from Saturday 5 to Tuesday 8. It's the first big weekend of the Neapolitan Christmas, with the nativity scene street packed, the markets open and the city already lit up. The long weekend at a glance
| Day | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Saturday 5 December | arrivals, historic centre packed from the afternoon |
| Sunday 6 December | the most crowded day at San Gregorio Armeno |
| Monday 7 December | a working day for many: the best time for museums and nativity scenes |
| Tuesday 8 December | Feast of the Immaculate Conception; some museums closed for their weekly closing day |
By tradition, on 8 December Neapolitans put up the Christmas tree and the nativity scene at home and the festive season begins. In Piazza del Gesù Nuovo, on the Guglia dell'Immacolata (the Immaculate Conception spire), the fire brigade pays homage to the statue of the Virgin with a wreath of flowers.
Four days in Naples: a possible plan
Saturday: the old centre
Arrive, drop your bags and head down to Spaccanapoli. In the afternoon the Cathedral (Duomo), then a pizza on Via dei Tribunali: on these days it's best to go early, before 19:00, or put your name on the list and go for a stroll.
Sunday: nativity scenes and the Veiled Christ
San Gregorio Armeno first thing in the morning, before 10:00, when the workshops open and the crowds haven't arrived yet. Then the Sansevero Chapel with your pre-booked ticket. In the afternoon, Underground Naples (Napoli Sotterranea) or a wander around the cloisters, for example the majolica-tiled one at Santa Chiara.
Monday: sea, Vomero or Christmas markets
This is the right day for the places that close on Tuesdays: the National Archaeological Museum in the morning, then the funicular up to Vomero and Castel Sant'Elmo at sunset. Alternatively, the Pietrarsa Christmas markets, in the old railway museum in Portici, a few minutes away by train.
Tuesday 8: the Immaculate Conception
A stroll along the seafront to Castel dell'Ovo, Piazza del Plebiscito and Via Toledo with its Christmas lights. The Catacombs of San Gennaro close on Wednesdays, not Tuesdays: they're a good choice for the morning of the 8th.
Tip: this long weekend is one of the busiest times of the year. Book your accommodation well in advance and choose the Historic Centre or the Via Toledo area: you can do everything on foot and you don't need a car, which can't enter the old centre anyway.
Crowds and safety
- At San Gregorio Armeno, on the busiest days, you move at walking pace: in recent years the City Council has introduced one-way pedestrian routes. Follow the directions of the municipal police.
- Keep bags and phones in front of you in the most crowded streets.
- Get around by metro and funicular: the streets of the centre are congested.
What to eat on these days
From early December the pasticcerie sell roccocò, mostaccioli, susamielli and struffoli. Read the guide to Neapolitan Christmas sweets.
