Before you go: bradyseism

Bradyseism is the slow movement of the ground in this volcanic area, and it can cause earthquakes. The ground has been rising since 2005.

The alert level is yellow, phase 2 of attention (Italian Civil Protection website, consulted on 1 November 2026). The INGV bulletin of 27 October 2026 reports uplift of about 10 mm a month.

There were earthquake swarms in 2025 and 2026. The magnitude 4.7 earthquake of 31 July 2026 caused damage in Pozzuoli. The Park closed all its sites for checks, then reopened them in stages during August.

What to see

Tip: go on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday. Those are the days when Baia, Cumae, the Amphitheatre and Piscina Mirabilis should all be open.

Tickets

Cumae and the Baths of Baia open at 9:00. In November and December they close around 16:00, according to the 2024 table still online.

Getting there

  1. Cumana train from Montesanto: Pozzuoli 20-30 minutes, Lucrino about 30, Fusaro about 40. The full line has been running again since 11 September 2026, with a new Pozzuoli station.
  2. Line 2: suspended since June 2026 between Campi Flegrei and Pozzuoli Solfatara, with replacement buses about every 15 minutes. The closure is due to CO2 in the tunnel: test runs were under way in late October, but there is no reopening date.
  3. EAV buses: needed for Cumae and Bacoli, with few departures. Use the EAV journey planner.

For the Baths of Baia, the Park suggests Fusaro or Lucrino station, then a bus or about 1 km on foot.

A typical day

  1. Cumana from Montesanto in the morning to Fusaro.
  2. Baths of Baia and a stop by the lake.
  3. Cumana to Pozzuoli: lunch near the port.
  4. Flavian Amphitheatre and the Macellum columns from outside.
  5. Back to Naples in the afternoon.

With a car you can add Cumae, Baia Castle or Piscina Mirabilis.
