Line 1 and the art stations
Line 1 is the one you will use most: it links the Central Station (Garibaldi) with the port (Municipio), Via Toledo, the Historic Centre (Dante, Università), the Archaeological Museum (Museo) and Vomero (Vanvitelli).
Many stations are genuine works of contemporary art: the most famous is Toledo, with its large blue hall that recalls the sea, often listed among the most beautiful stations in Europe. It is worth getting off just to see it. Università, Garibaldi and Municipio are also beautiful; at Municipio, remains of the ancient Roman harbour came to light during the excavations.
Line 2
This is a metropolitan train that crosses the city from east to west: handy for Cavour (Archaeological Museum), Montesanto, Piazza Amedeo (Chiaia), Mergellina and Pozzuoli.
The funiculars
Four funiculars link the centre with the hills:
- Centrale: from Via Toledo to Vomero (Piazza Fuga);
- Chiaia: from Parco Margherita to Vomero (Via Cimarosa);
- Montesanto: from Montesanto to Vomero (Via Morghen), near Castel Sant'Elmo;
- Mergellina: from Mergellina to Posillipo.
Tip: to go up to Castel Sant'Elmo take the Montesanto or Centrale funicular; to come down you can walk along the Pedamentina, a stepped path with a wonderful view.
Trains for day trips
- Circumvesuviana (EAV), the local commuter train: from Porta Nolana and Garibaldi to Herculaneum (Ercolano), Pompeii and Sorrento.
- Cumana and Circumflegrea (EAV): from Montesanto towards the Campi Flegrei.
- Regional trains from Napoli Centrale to Caserta and Salerno.
Tickets
There are single-journey tickets, timed tickets (90 minutes) and day tickets, valid on several types of transport under the integrated system. Prices and ticket types change: check them on the websites of ANM, EAV and Unico Campania. On Line 1, the funiculars and Alibus you can pay directly by tapping a contactless card at the gates.
