Central Station area: is it a good place to stay? Pros and cons
Piazza Garibaldi is the gateway to Naples: high-speed trains arrive here, and this is where the Circumvesuviana to Pompeii and Sorrento and the Alibus to the airport leave from. Staying here makes sense if you have plenty of day trips planned or arrive late and leave early.

At a glance
- Who it's for
- Travellers taking day trips to Pompeii, Herculaneum, Sorrento or Caserta, or arriving and leaving by train or plane
- Pros
- Trains, metro Lines 1 and 2, the Circumvesuviana and the Alibus a few steps away; prices often lower
- Cons
- The square is busy and chaotic, especially in the evening; less charm than the Historic Centre
- To the centre
- The Cathedral and Forcella are 10–15 minutes away on foot
Why choose this area
Almost everything leaves from here:
- Trenitalia and Italo trains to Rome and the rest of Italy, and regional trains to Caserta;
- the Circumvesuviana, the local commuter train (Garibaldi station), to Herculaneum, Pompeii and Sorrento;
- the Alibus to the airport and the port;
- metro Line 1 (Garibaldi) towards Università, Toledo and the Vomero, and Line 2 towards Cavour, Montesanto, Chiaia and Pozzuoli.
In a few minutes on foot you are in Forcella and at the Cathedral, in other words already in the Historic Centre.
What it's like to stay there
The square is large and busy, and in the evening it is not the most attractive spot in Naples. The side streets and those towards Forcella and the Cathedral are quieter. In return you save time every morning, and often money too.
Tip: choose accommodation in the streets towards the Cathedral or Corso Umberto, not directly on the square, and ask your host for the best route from the station, especially if you arrive in the evening.
