A typical half day
- Archaeological Museum at opening time: 2-3 hours. Get off at Museo metro; the exit is right in front of the entrance.

- Gallerie d'Italia, Via Toledo 177: about 1 hour, ticket about €8.
- Galleria Umberto I, a few minutes on foot: a covered stroll, free.
- Gran Caffè Gambrinus to finish: coffee and a sfogliatella.
On Tuesdays the Archaeological Museum is closed: start with Naples Underground. On Mondays the Gallerie d'Italia is closed.
Museums and churches
Before you set off, check the closing day.
| Place | Time | Closed |
|---|---|---|
| Archaeological Museum | 2-3 hours | Tuesday |
| Sansevero Chapel | 45 minutes | Tuesday |
| Gallerie d'Italia | 1 hour | Monday |
| Capodimonte Museum | half a day | Wednesday |
| Cathedral and Treasure | 30-60 minutes | cathedral open as a church |
The Sansevero Chapel always needs booking: on rainy days don't count on last-minute places. Pick a time slot as soon as you know your date. Capodimonte and the Catacombs are reached by bus from the Museo Nazionale stop: in heavy rain, choose places close to the metro.
Underground sites
You won't notice the rain down there. Bring a sweatshirt and comfortable shoes.
- Naples Underground, Piazza San Gaetano: guided tours only, 1-1.5 hours, many steps and one narrow passage.
- Bourbon Tunnel (Galleria Borbonica), near Piazza del Plebiscito: a 19th-century tunnel, opening times on the official website.
- Catacombs of San Gennaro: guided tour of about 1 hour, about €13, booking compulsory, closed on Wednesdays.
Arcades and historic cafés
- Galleria Umberto I, opposite the Teatro San Carlo: a covered street with a glass roof, lined with shops and bars.
- Gran Caffè Gambrinus, open since 1860: standing at the bar costs less than sitting at a table.
- Caffè Mexico, Piazza Dante: pay at the till first.
- Scaturchio, Piazza San Domenico Maggiore: coffee and a ministeriale, its chocolate medallion.

Tip: showers in Naples are often heavy and short. Keep the morning for something indoors and save the seafront for when it stops.
What to avoid
- Hydrofoils in rough seas: they can be cancelled, and ferries are more reliable. Ask the company before you go to the port.
- Vesuvius: in fog you see nothing and the path can close. With an orange weather alert it shuts.
- Trails: the Path of the Gods is slippery when wet. After heavy rain, wait a day or two.
- Pompeii and Herculaneum: these are open-air visits. In a thunderstorm, don't shelter under trees.
- Castel Sant'Elmo: it can stay closed in strong wind or rain.
- City parks: the council often closes them during weather alerts.
- Wet paving stones: the alleys get slippery, especially downhill.

Frequently asked questions
What can you do in Naples when it rains?
The Archaeological Museum, Naples Underground, the Sansevero Chapel, the Gallerie d'Italia, the Galleria Umberto I and a historic café. Line 1 links most of them with little walking.
Which museums are open on Tuesdays?
The Archaeological Museum and the Sansevero Chapel are closed. The Capodimonte Museum, the Gallerie d'Italia and the Catacombs of San Gennaro stay open: always check the official websites.
Do hydrofoils run when it rains?
Rain alone doesn't usually stop them: what matters is the sea. In rough seas sailings can be cancelled. Check with the company before you leave and consider a ferry.
Can you climb Vesuvius in the rain?
Better not. The view disappears and the path can close; with an orange weather alert, access stops. The Park posts notices on its website.
Is Naples Underground open when it rains?
The route is below ground, so rain doesn't change the visit. Check the times on the official website and bring a sweatshirt: it is cool down there all year.
