San Gregorio Armeno, the nativity scene street
In the heart of the old centre, between Via dei Tribunali and Spaccanapoli, Via San Gregorio Armeno has been the street of nativity scene (presepe) artisans for centuries. The workshops work all year round, but it's at Christmas that the street becomes a river of people, lights and stalls.
In 2026 the nativity scene fair opens on 1 November, earlier than in past years: the artisans of the Arte Presepiale San Gregorio Armeno association asked for it to lengthen the season. The programme of side events has not been published yet.
What to buy
- Classic shepherd figures (pastori) in terracotta and fabric, from the Nativity to the trades of 18th-century Naples: the fishmonger, the innkeeper, the chestnut seller.
- Pieces to build your own nativity scene: houses, miniature shops, lights, working fountains, miniature food (bread, fish, fruit) that is an art form in itself.
- Topical figurines: every year the artisans model the personalities of the moment, from football to showbusiness. For 2026 figurines dedicated to the America's Cup, which Naples will host in 2027, have been announced.
- The lucky horn (cornetto), in coral, silver or terracotta.
Tip: if you want to see the workshops calmly and talk to the artisans, go on a weekday morning, before 11:00. At weekends in December the street is so packed you move at a crawl: keep an eye on bags and phones.
