Capri from Naples: what to see, how to get there and how to plan your day
Capri is less than an hour from Naples by hydrofoil. You can do it as a day trip, but if you can, stay at least one night: once the last hydrofoil leaves with the day-trippers, the island turns quiet and beautiful again.

At a glance
- From Naples
- Hydrofoil from Molo Beverello, about 50 minutes; ferry from Calata Porta di Massa, about 1 hour 20
- On the island
- You arrive at Marina Grande; funicular up to Capri town and the Piazzetta, bus to Anacapri
- In one day
- Piazzetta, Gardens of Augustus, Faraglioni viewpoint, Anacapri and Monte Solaro
- Blue Grotto
- You go in on a small rowing boat; when the sea is rough the entrance is closed
- When to go
- Spring and early autumn; in summer take the first hydrofoil to avoid the crowds
Getting around the island
Hydrofoils arrive at Marina Grande. From here the funicular climbs in a few minutes to Capri, the town, with its famous Piazzetta. For Anacapri and the other villages there are buses and taxis; you can walk everywhere, but the island is all slopes and steps.
What to see
- The Piazzetta and the lanes of Capri town, with their shops and cafés.
- The Gardens of Augustus (Giardini di Augusto), flowering terraces looking out over the Faraglioni and Marina Piccola.
- The Tragara viewpoint, the closest spot for photographing the Faraglioni.
- Anacapri, quieter, with Villa San Michele and the chairlift up Monte Solaro, the highest point on the island.
- The Blue Grotto (Grotta Azzurra): you reach it by boat from Marina Grande or overland from Anacapri, and you go in lying down in a small rowing boat. The blue light is strongest in the middle of the day. When the sea is rough it is closed.
- A boat trip around the island, from Marina Grande: the best way to see the Faraglioni up close, and the sea caves.
Tip: take the first hydrofoil of the morning and head straight to Anacapri and Monte Solaro, then do Capri town and the Gardens of Augustus in the afternoon, when many groups are leaving. Book your return with some margin, and check the weather: in heavy seas hydrofoils can be cancelled.
Sleep in Capri or in Naples?
Capri as a day trip from Naples works. But a night on the island changes the experience: in the evening the Piazzetta and the footpaths are peaceful and the light on the Faraglioni is magical. Accommodation on the island is limited and in demand: book early.
